In the heart of Kauga village, Mukono district, Central Uganda, lives a young man whose story is reshaping perceptions and inspiring hope. Joseph Mwanda, a determined 19-year-old youth with a physical disability, is currently in his second year of carpentry studies at SSHJM-CHIN Vocational School. Against all odds, Joseph is proving that resilience, skill, and vision can build a future stronger than any barrier.

Born and raised in a humble home in Kauga, Joseph faced the challenges of disability from an early age. Mobility was a constant struggle, and opportunities for skill development seemed few and far between. But Joseph carried within him a spirit that refused to be limited by circumstance. However, his life took a positive turn when he joined SSHJM-CHIN Vocational School. There, he stood out for his dedication and excellence in carpentry, not for his crutches. The school offered a supportive environment, adapting practical sessions to his needs while maintaining high training standard. Joseph was among the students who trained in the production of assistive devices in year 1, and he continues to be actively involved in fabrication of additional devices including wheelchairs, walkers, parallel bars among others. He also serves as a trainer for new trainees at the CHIN Orthopedic Workshop, where he even fabricated his own wooden crutches.

Now in his second year, Joseph has blossomed into one of the most promising students in the carpentry department with additional computer skills, making him able to be update with the current trending crafting designs that build his passion to compete not only locally, but also nationally at an opportunity time. His creations ranging from finely crafted tables to intricately designed benches reflect both his technical skill and artistic eye. His recent masterpiece, like his wooden crutches and Cerebral Palsy chairs have drawn admiration not only within the school but from members of the local community.

Joseph Mwanda has become a symbol of courage in Kauga, mentoring new students especially those with disabilities and inspiring them to believe in their potential. His dream is to open an inclusive carpentry workshop in Mukono to empower youth with disabilities through training and mentorship. Joseph’s journey is a powerful example of how determination and opportunity can transform lives. He’s not just crafting furniture, but building a legacy of inclusion, empowerment, and hope for his entire community.
