Our Story
SSHJM Children in Need (CHIN) is a community-based organization deeply rooted in Mukono District, south-central Uganda. Established in 2004 by the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SSHJM), an international congregation, CHIN was born out of a profound need to address the underserved needs of the local population. From humble beginnings with limited resources and facilities, CHIN has grown into a dynamic organization orchestrating a comprehensive development program across Mukono District.

Our primary focus areas include Inclusive Education, Inclusive Health, Climate Resilient Livelihoods, and Justice and Human Rights. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and youth with disabilities by providing access to appropriate care, education, and opportunities for self-reliance and independence. Our target groups include children and youth with disabilities, their parents, women’s groups, and unemployed youth.
A significant milestone in our journey is the construction of a purpose-built training center in Nama Sub-County, Mukono District. This facility houses six training rooms where we offer special needs education and training services to our participants. This center has become the cornerstone of our operations, enabling us to deliver specialized training and support to those in need.

CHIN’s success is also attributed to our extensive network of local, national, and international partners. We collaborate with NGOs, CBOs, local government, hospitals, churches of all denominations, and community groups, all united in support of children with disabilities. A notable aspect of our collaboration is our partnership with local schools in Nama Sub-County, including both special needs and inclusive schools, to support students with disabilities.

Through these combined efforts, CHIN continues to transform lives, empower communities, and build a brighter future for children and youth with disabilities in Mukono District.
