Climate Resilient Livelihoods

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable communities. In Mukono, SSHJM-CHIN is taking bold action to support climate change mitigation and adaptation. Through sustainable livelihoods and socio-economic development, we help communities build resilience against climate shocks. With emphasis on urban initiatives, we empower people to protect their environment while securing a future for their families. Everyone deserves a sustainable livelihood and a chance to thrive, and we are committed to making that a reality.

About this theme

Being able to earn a living that ensures a dignified lifestyle is a basic human right. However, many communities in Mukono, Uganda, continue to struggle with securing decent work, sufficient income, and food and nutrition security. The climate crisis is worsening these challenges, particularly for small-scale farming households whose agricultural livelihoods depend on increasingly unpredictable rainfall. In Mukono, the loss of soil fertility and land fragmentation further threaten food production, reducing yields and making it harder for families to sustain themselves.

SSHJM-CHIN is committed to addressing these pressing issues by promoting sustainable agricultural practices that restore soil fertility, improve land use efficiency, and build resilience against climate change. In line with Pope Francis' Laudato Si’ call to listen to “the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor… and Care for Our Common Home,” we are working with communities to adopt climate-smart solutions that safeguard both livelihoods and the environment.
